Self Publishing, Why Self Publish - http://www.WhySelfPublish.net Do you have questions about Self Publishing? Sign up for a free video series at http://www.WhySelfPublish.net --------------------------------- Hi, this is Lisa Michelle Umina from Halo Publishing. In this video, I'll answer the question: What do I look for in the agreement I'm about to sign with my publisher? You've done all your research, you found the publisher that you want to hold your hand through the entire process and now is the time to sign the agreement. How can you be sure that all the elements that are important to you, for you and your book and the future, are covered in this agreement? Here's what to look for. First, what are your rights? You should own 100% rights to your book. Second, what rights are you going to be giving to your publisher? The rights of the publisher should be crystal clear; they're going to have the right to publisher the book, distribute the book into the market and also market your book. The third element is this -- what are your terms? When looking at the terms, can you cancel it at any time? Will there be cancellation fees? The fourth element, which I think is really important, is you need to have it mapped out exactly what are going to be your author royalties. What are author royalties? How do you arrive to receiving your author role for the sales of your book? Let me show you. What happens is the retail cost of your book, whatever you set that to be, the book stores are going to sell that book so its going to be the retail cost minus the book store commission to sell that book minus the printing of the book equals your author royalty and the publisher should map out a formula for you and help you set the price of your book, and again, that's another key element too. At all times, you've got control of the entire process so make sure you confirm that with your publisher. Lets recap what you should look for in your agreement: 1. You need to own 100% rights to your book. 2. What rights will the publisher have? The publisher will have the rights to publish your book, market your book and distribute the book. 3. The control of your book; you need to have complete control of the book and they should help map out what its going to be and what decisions you're going to make. Another important part of this is royalties. You need to find out at the end of each book sale what am I making as the author for each book that's sold, whether its in the book store or sold anywhere in distribution. 4. Your terms of agreement. Can you get out if you want to? How long is this relationship going to be? Is it for one year? Are there going to be any other fees after the year? Look at that especially and make sure everything's mapped out for you. Good luck and I hope you find the publisher you're comfortable working with. Thank you for joining me. http://www.ebookpublishingschool.com Elliott Katz is the bestselling author of Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants and six other non-fiction books. He is a professional speechwriter and has written on a wide-range of subjects from the outdoors to the economy to how to stimulate ideas and innovation in the workplace. When Elliott wrote Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants he was only writing it for himself and his friends. Shortly after he put it up on Amazon he was approached by agents in Mexico and Poland. That’s when he realized the book has international appeal and he became interested in the topic of foreign publishing rights. To date, the book has been translated into 24 languages. Our conversation delved deeply into the topic of how to license and sell foreign language publishing rights even if you are a self published author. Elliott talked about the three major advantages of selling in foreign markets. He also talked about pitfalls to avoid when negotiating foreign publishing rights contracts. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation. • Books aren’t like toothpaste. People look at your cover and they are looking for a book to help them with their problem. If you have a good cover and good information your book will do well. • The Internet makes it much easier to find agents who want to sell your book in foreign countries. (There are links below to help you find foreign agents for your books.) • The benefit to having an agent in foreign countries is they have contacts in their publishing industry. It makes your book stronger to have an agent standing behind it. • Before you seek out a foreign agent ask yourself, “is this a book that would appeal to foreign markets?” • Cultures may be different but human nature is the same throughout the world. • In the United States and Canada it’s very common to have one agent represent you exclusively. In foreign countries you can often have several agents representing your book. When foreign agents ask for exclusivity don’t feel like you have to say yes. Think about it and the way your options before moving forward. 3 Advantages to Selling Your Foreign Rights 1. It is another income stream. 2. You reach people in parts of the world that don’t speak English 3. It gives your book an extra layer of credibility it wouldn’t otherwise have. A Standard Foreign Rights Publishing Deal The deal is typically structured like this: In their initial offer the publisher will tell you how many books with a plan to print and the commission you get on each book sold. So let’s say a German publisher wants to print 5,000 copies of your book and sell it for the equivalent of $15 US. They want to give you a 7% commission on the first 5,000 copies. When you do the math 7% x $15 x 5,000 copies = $5,250. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - FULL Audio Book - by Mary Wollstonecraft SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/GreenAudioBooks - A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects (1792), written by the 18th-century British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, is one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy. In it, Wollstonecraft responds to those educational and political theorists of the 18th century who did not believe women should have an education. She argues that women ought to have an education commensurate with their position in society, claiming that women are essential to the nation because they educate its children and because they could be "companions" to their husbands, rather than mere wives. Instead of viewing women as ornaments to society or property to be traded in marriage, Wollstonecraft maintains that they are human beings deserving of the same fundamental rights as men. Wollstonecraft was prompted to write the Rights of Woman after reading Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord's 1791 report to the French National Assembly, which stated that women should only receive a domestic education; she used her commentary on this specific event to launch a broad attack against sexual double standards and to indict men for encouraging women to indulge in excessive emotion. Wollstonecraft wrote the Rights of Woman hurriedly in order to respond directly to ongoing events; she intended to write a more thoughtful second volume but died before completing it. While Wollstonecraft does call for equality between the sexes in particular areas of life, such as morality, she does not explicitly state that men and women are equal. Her ambiguous statements regarding the equality of the sexes have since made it difficult to classify Wollstonecraft as a modern feminist, particularly since the word and the concept were unavailable to her. Although it is commonly assumed now that the Rights of Woman was unfavourably received, this is a modern misconception based on the belief that Wollstonecraft was as reviled during her lifetime as she became after the publication of William Godwin's Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1798). The Rights of Woman was actually well received when it was first published in 1792. One biographer has called it "perhaps the most original book of [Wollstonecraft's] century" - HISTORICAL CONTEXT A Vindication of the Rights of Woman was written against the tumultuous background of the French Revolution and the debates that it spawned in Britain. In a lively and sometimes vicious pamphlet war, now referred to as the Revolution Controversy, British political commentators addressed topics ranging from representative government to human rights to the separation of church and state, many of these issues having been raised in France first. Wollstonecraft first entered this fray in 1790 with A Vindication of the Rights of Men, a response to Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790).[2] In his Reflections, Burke criticized the view of many British thinkers and writers who had welcomed the early stages of the French revolution. While they saw the revolution as analogous to Britain's own Glorious Revolution in 1688, which had restricted the powers of the monarchy, Burke argued that the appropriate historical analogy was the English Civil War (1642--1651) in which Charles I had been executed in 1649. He viewed the French revolution as the violent overthrow of a legitimate government. In Reflections he argues that citizens do not have the right to revolt against their government because civilization is the result of social and political consensus; its traditions cannot be continually challenged—the result would be anarchy. One of the key arguments of Wollstonecraft's Rights of Men, published just six weeks after Burke's Reflections, is that rights cannot be based on tradition; rights, she argues, should be conferred because they are reasonable and just, regardless of their basis in tradition. - If you enjoyed listening to "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - FULL Audio Book - by Mary Wollstonecraft" please rate, comment and subscribe to GreenAudioBooks, We really appreciate it :) Thanks for viewing A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - FULL Audio Book - by Mary Wollstonecraft We hope you enjoyed A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - FULL Audio Book - by Mary Wollstonecraft
